This series is an encounter with devotional poetry, especially that of the seventeenth century. It will serve to quicken the listener's appreciation for literature that springs from a love for God-and feed the flame of devotion. The primary texts that are explored are the "Holy Sonnets" of John Donne and "The Temple" of George Herbert. The course concludes with a brief look at some contemporary devotional poets such as Margaret Avison and Denise Levertov.
Maxine Hancock is Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Among her other books are several on family relationships, including Living on Less and Liking in More, Re-evaluating Your Commitments, and Creative, Confident, Children. And notably, her work on Bunyan in A Key in the Window: Marginal Notes in Bunyan's Narratives.
