Eugene Peterson
Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College. BA (Seattle
Pacific), STB (New York Theological Seminary), MA (Johns Hopkins),
DHL (Hon.) (Seattle Pacific)
"If we get our information from the biblical material there
is no doubt that the Christian life is a dancing, leaping, daring life." — Eugene
Peterson
Eugene Peterson was for many years James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual
Theology at Regent College. He also
served as founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel
Air, Maryland. A prolific author, he is probably most
well known for The Message, his translation of the Bible in the
language of today. Now retired from full-time teaching, Peterson and his
wife Jan live in the Big Sky Country of rural Montana.

The Beatitudes have an important role in guiding the church's understanding
of Jesus' mission and message. As well, they are foundational to
the development of Christian spirituality. They are to spirituality,
therefore, what the Ten Commandments are to morality. This series
looks at the eight Beatitudes as elements in preparing the self/soul
for the perception and reception of truth. They constitute the "way"
in which the "truth" can be encountered and then the "life" embraced. |

Christian Leadership is built on a foundation of followership—following
Jesus. Leadership that is not well-grounded in following Jesus
is dangerous to both the church and the world. Contemporary leadership
models are not so different from the models available to Christians
in the first century and to which Jesus' Follow Me provides such
a radical and uncompromising contrast. This series considers three
prominent first-century leaders that set out the basic alternatives
to following Jesus. |

In this series, Eugene Peterson uses the letter to the Ephesians
as the primary text in developing the craft of spiritual formation
(soulcraft). The letter is explored in the actual conditions in
which this formation takes place in us, such as the home, workplace,
congregation, institutions and culture. As God does his formational
work in us and with those with whom we live, we will develop skills
in recognizing what he is doing, and look for the appropriate ways
to respond, participate, and guide.

As we become practiced in sin, we develop excellent defenses against
grace. God is out to penetrate our defenses. How does he do it?
By frontal assault? Sometimes. But sometimes indirection is called
for; slipping past the defenses on the slant. It was a favourite
method of Jesus; his parables show him at work. By examining the
Lukan parables we can train ourselves in discerning both the spiritual
defenses that we build up against grace and the method of “indirection” that
Jesus uses to get through to us. |

Discipleship in an Instant Society |
An Exploration in Vocational Holiness |
Our
society is no less obsessed with the immediate than when Peterson
first wrote this book. But discipleship will not yield to prescriptions
for swift success, it calls instead for perseverance, for a long
obedience in the same direction. Using Psalms 120-134 he finds
encouragement for modern pilgrims as they learn to grow in worship,
service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing.
Also included is an epilogue in which he reflects on the themes of
this book and his ministry over the succeeding twenty years.

This
book emanates with a special poignancy out of Peterson's own crisis
experience as a pastor.
Peterson tells about the "abyss," the "gaping crevasse," the "chasm" that he
experienced, early in his ministry, between his Christian faith and his pastoral
vocation.
Using the Jonah story as a narrative structure, Peterson probes the
spiritual dimensions of the pastoral calling and seeks to reclaim the ground
taken over by those who are trying to enlist pastors in religious careers.
